The Kentucky Derby is more than just a horse race—it's a Southern spectacle, and for many, the adult version of prom (but with horses and high-stakes betting). The history of the Derby dates all the way back to 1875, making it the longest continuously held sporting event in the United States. Held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, it's a weekend rooted in tradition, fashion, and a whole lot of mint juleps.

Let’s talk outfits. Because if there’s one thing you should know before attending: the outfit is everything! Think bold choices - florals, feathers, and hats so large they deserve their own zip code. For my first-ever Derby experience, I attended Thurby (aka Thursday of Derby week—a local favorite) and pulled together a dreamy look with a dress from Lulus. Don't worry here is the link for my OUTFIT DETAILS!

The finishing touches? Accessories from local boutiques, including a major shoutout to That Cute Little Shop. Supporting local businesses for Derby is a must—they just get it, from the statement earrings to the fabulous fascinators. I, personally had my heart set on a hat, but they were fun to try on!

Something you might not know, there were photo ops at every turn. Woodford Reserve's branded booths were a total vibe. They were even selling a mint julep served in a $5,000 gold cup (no, that's not a typo). While we're team Lily all the way, we had to grab a mint julep just to say we did (No, NOT the one in the gold up haha). It's basically a Derby rite of passage, even if you only take a sip. Oh, and Woodford even did a reel with us, which was such a fun moment!

We opted for a suite (go big or go home, right?). It had everything: a balcony overlooking the track, a private betting window, food and drinks, and the sweetest bartender, Ms. Debby, who kept the cocktails coming. Yes, it was a splurge. Yes, it was completely boujee. And YES, it was totally worth it.

A few lessons for next year? Wear a long dress. It was windy and chillier than I expected, and a maxi would have been perfect. Also, bring a pair of comfy shoes to swap in, a clear bag (because security is no joke), a charger, and a tripod for all the inevitable photo ops!

Here's to more Derby days and even bigger hats next year!
